glass plants are closing while new hybrid furnaces are opening because producers are concentrating lower demand into fewer, more efficient sites. Weak demand has left some older capacity underused. At the same time, energy costs and long-term investment plans are pushing producers to upgrade the sites they expect to keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These two trends do not show that Europe is abandoning glass packaging. They show that the industry is changing where and how it produces glass bottles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main shift is from maintaining every existing furnace to choosing which plants deserve new investment. Some sites will lose capacity. Other sites will receive hybrid furnaces, heat recovery systems and new production lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Happening to European Glass Production Capacity?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several large glass producers adjusted their European production networks during 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ardagh Group confirmed that its Germersheim facility in Germany will close during the third quarter of 2026. The company said the decision would address challenging demand conditions and bring its capacity closer to current market needs. The closure is part of Ardagh\u2019s wider \u201cClearly Ardagh\u201d turnaround plan, according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ardaghgroup.com\/investors\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/266\/ardagh-group-s-a---second-quarter-2026-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">second-quarter 2026 results<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Germersheim plant is not a small warehouse or finishing site. Industry reporting states that the plant produces just under two million glass containers per day and employs around 260 people. The site mainly serves beverage bottle markets. This scale makes the closure a meaningful reduction in German production capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ardagh is not the only producer making this type of adjustment. Verallia closed its Essen plant in Germany in March 2026. The company also stopped a furnace at Ch\u00e2teaubernard in France and another at Knottingley in the United Kingdom. Verallia described these actions as a response to excess capacity in the European market in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verallia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Verallia_2026_first_half_results_presentation_transcript.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">2026 first-half results<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Verallia restarted a more efficient furnace in Leeds while stopping older equipment elsewhere. This detail is important. Producers are not simply removing every available tonne of capacity. They are moving production towards plants that offer better efficiency, location or long-term value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Are Some European Glass Plants Closing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some European glass plants are closing because demand has fallen below the capacity installed during stronger market periods. The decline is especially clear in wine, sparkling wine, cognac and some spirits markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verallia reported that European glass packaging volumes contracted sharply in 2023 and remained below 2019 levels. The company linked this change partly to a 4% decline in European alcohol consumption since 2019. Verallia also pointed to weaker exports from its customers to the United States and Asia in its European industrial footprint announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decline is not equal across every glass packaging category. A producer can experience weak wine bottle demand while food jar or spirits bottle volumes remain more stable. Regional conditions also differ. A plant in Germany may have low utilisation while a site serving Spain or another market still needs more capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glass production also has high fixed costs. A large furnace, its forming lines and its supporting equipment require major investment and continuous operation. A plant becomes less competitive when its output remains below the level needed to cover those costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A producer may therefore close one site and transfer its customers to another plant. A furnace closure at one location does not remove the need to rebuild aging furnaces elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A conventional glass furnace relies mainly on fossil fuel to melt raw materials and recycled glass. A hybrid furnace uses both fuel and electricity. The operator can adjust the energy mix according to the furnace design, electricity supply and production needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u201chybrid\u201d does not describe one fixed system. Different projects use different shares of electricity, natural gas, biofuel or oxy-fuel combustion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verallia inaugurated its first hybrid furnace in Zaragoza, Spain, in April 2026. The company invested \u20ac63 million in the project. The furnace uses 70% renewable electricity and 30% natural gas or biofuel. It has three production lines and can produce different glass colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investment will also raise the total output of the Zaragoza site, which operates two furnaces, to 1.3 million containers per day at full capacity. Verallia said the project supports demand from wine, spirits and beverage customers in the Spanish market. The company published the project details in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verallia.com\/en\/communique-de-presse\/saragoza-hybrid-furnace-inauguration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Zaragoza hybrid furnace announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O-I also produced the first glass from its new hybrid furnace in Veauche, France, in June 2026. O-I originally announced an investment of approximately $65 million for the plant\u2019s electrification and modernisation. The furnace can use between 30% and 70% electricity. O-I also added heat recovery and air preheating systems to the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Veauche project replaced one of the plant\u2019s existing furnaces. It did not create a completely new glass factory. This type of replacement allows O-I to keep production at a strategically located plant while changing the technology used to melt the glass. The original specifications are available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.o-i.com\/news\/o-i-glass-to-invest-65-million-in-electrification-and-decarbonization-in-veauche-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">O-I project announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More hybrid projects are also moving forward in France. Verallia is replacing an existing furnace at Saint-Romain-le-Puy with hybrid technology. Verescence is working with Fives to replace an existing furnace at Mers-les-Bains. Producers are reducing capacity where demand no longer supports a full plant.
