Not every glass bottle is safe for kombucha.

Kombucha may continue fermenting after it has been bottled. The remaining yeast can produce CO₂ inside the sealed package. If the pressure rises beyond what the bottle or closure can withstand, the package may leak or break.

A kombucha producer should use a glass bottle designed and tested for the actual product conditions. The team must consider carbonation, filling temperature, storage temperature and shelf life. A bottle’s appearance or weight cannot confirm that it is suitable.

Why Is Not Every Glass Bottle Safe for Kombucha?

Most food and beverage bottles use soda-lime container glass. However, these bottles are not all designed for the same conditions.

A bottle made for still juice may only need to handle normal filling and transport. A bottle used for carbonated kombucha must also withstand internal pressure. This pressure acts on the bottle body, shoulder, heel, base and neck.

The risk becomes higher when active fermentation continues inside a sealed container. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture explains that yeast can continue converting sugar and producing CO₂. It also warns that excess pressure can cause leakage or bottle breakage.

Thick glass does not automatically make a bottle pressure-safe. Glass distribution matters more than appearance alone. A heavy bottle may still have a thin or stressed area.

Bottle shape is not proof either. Round bottles are common for carbonated drinks because they avoid large flat surfaces and sharp corners. However, a round juice bottle should not be treated as a carbonated beverage bottle unless its specification supports that use.

What Bottles Can You Use for Kombucha?

The answer depends on what happens to the kombucha after filling.

A still and stabilized product places different demands on its packaging than a bottle-conditioned product. Forced carbonation also creates defined pressure requirements that must be matched to the bottle specification.

Kombucha Type

Main Packaging Concern

What Buyers Should Confirm

Still, stabilized kombucha

Filling and storage conditions

Filling temperature, processing method and closure fit

Force-carbonated kombucha

Known internal pressure

Target carbonation, bottle pressure specification and sealing performance

Bottle-conditioned kombucha

Pressure may continue to rise

Fermentation control, expected pressure, cold chain and tested shelf life

Pasteurized kombucha

Heat and possible pressure changes

Filling temperature, cooling process and thermal compatibility

A pressure-rated glass beverage bottle is the safest starting point when the product contains carbonation or may continue fermenting. The supplier still needs the actual product information before confirming a bottle.

The bottle and closure must also work as one package. A suitable bottle cannot prevent leakage if the cap, liner or sealing surface does not match the neck finish.

Our guide to glass bottles for sparkling water explains how pressure, temperature and bottle design affect carbonated beverage packaging. The same basic pressure concerns apply to kombucha, but fermentation creates an extra variable.

Are Swing-Top, Beer or Juice Bottles Safe for Kombucha?

Some swing-top and beer bottles are designed for carbonated drinks. Others are decorative bottles or still-beverage containers that only look similar.

A swing-top closure does not prove that the glass body is pressure-rated. The wire assembly, gasket, bottle finish and glass container must all suit the intended pressure. Buyers should request the specification for the complete package.

Beer bottles may be suitable when they are manufactured and tested for pressurized beverages. However, a used beer bottle has already passed through filling, transport and handling. Scratches and impact damage can reduce its practical strength. Commercial producers should not base a packaging decision on the fact that a bottle previously held beer.

Standard juice bottles present the same problem. Many juice bottles are designed for still products. Some are made for hot filling, but heat resistance and pressure resistance are not the same thing. A hot-fill bottle should not be used for carbonated kombucha unless the supplier confirms both requirements.

Can Kombucha Be Bottled in Plastic Bottles?

Yes. Kombucha is not only packaged in glass.

PET bottles and aluminum cans are also used for kombucha. A PET bottle designed for carbonated beverages offers low weight and good impact resistance. However, its gas barrier, shelf life and heat compatibility differ from those of glass.

Glass remains popular because it provides a strong barrier through the bottle wall and has little interaction with the drink. It also gives refrigerated kombucha a clean, premium appearance.

The packaging material should follow the product and sales channel. A lightweight PET bottle may suit wide distribution, while glass may fit cafés, premium retail and direct-to-consumer brands. Neither material is suitable unless the exact container has been reviewed for the filling and storage conditions.

Does Kombucha Need Refrigeration After Bottling?

The answer depends on the production process.

Raw or unpasteurized kombucha may continue to change during storage. Refrigeration slows yeast activity, but it does not always stop fermentation completely. Producers still need to establish a tested shelf life and maintain the required cold chain.

The Pennsylvania guidance describes refrigeration alone as the least reliable method for controlling continued fermentation. It states that the producer must determine shelf life according to later yeast growth, CO₂ and alcohol production.

A British Columbia Centre for Disease Control study also found that most kombucha products in its survey carried refrigeration instructions. The agency noted concerns about alcohol increasing during shelf life or temperature abuse.

Refrigeration does not make an unsuitable bottle safe. The bottle still needs to handle the pressure that could develop during filling, storage, transport or a break in the cold chain.

Pasteurized or otherwise stabilized kombucha may follow different storage conditions. The producer should confirm those conditions through a validated process instead of relying on the bottle alone.

How Can Buyers Check a Kombucha Bottle?

A product photo cannot show whether a glass bottle can hold carbonation. Bottle weight, wall thickness and shape cannot confirm it either.

Buyers should ask whether the exact bottle model was designed and tested for carbonated beverages. The supplier also needs to know whether the kombucha is still, force-carbonated or expected to continue fermenting after filling.

The final bottle and closure should be tested with the actual kombucha before bulk production. If the bottle’s pressure performance cannot be confirmed, it should not be used for carbonated or bottle-conditioned kombucha.

Conclusion

Not all glass bottles are safe for kombucha. A bottle made for still juice or decorative use should not be assumed to withstand carbonation simply because it looks thick or has a swing-top closure.

Kombucha producers need to consider fermentation, carbonation, filling temperature, storage conditions and shelf life.
