What Does a Glass Bottle Quote Include?

The first price looks like the best offer. However, it may cover only the empty bottle. The other quotations may include a cap, printing or stronger export cartons.

You cannot compare these three numbers until you know what is included.

For example, a bottle-only price of $0.38 may become $0.54 after adding a $0.07 cap, $0.05 printing cost and $0.04 packing cost. Another supplier may quote $0.48 for the same finished package.

In this case, the $0.48 quotation is cheaper, even though its bottle price looks higher.

This is why the supplier should clearly state whether the price covers the empty bottle or the finished package. The quotation should also show the order quantity and trade term.

A new bottle shape usually needs a new mold. The mold is mainly a first-order cost, so the first order may look more expensive than later orders.

Suppose a custom mold costs $1,800. For an order of 20,000 bottles, it adds $0.09 to the first-order cost of each bottle.

If the next order uses the same mold, you normally do not pay the full mold charge again. However, you may still have small setup or maintenance costs, depending on the project.

Why Is Glass Bottle Shipping So Expensive?

Glass bottles are heavy. Empty bottles also take up a lot of container space.

This makes their shipping cost different from that of small, light products.

Suppose two 500ml bottles have a similar factory price. One weighs 280 grams, while the other weighs 360 grams. The heavier bottle may feel more premium, but it also increases the shipment weight.

The bottle shape matters as well. A wide or unusually shaped bottle may leave more empty space inside each carton. Fewer bottles then fit in the same container.

This is why a freight forwarder cannot give an accurate price from the order quantity alone. The forwarder needs the packed carton size, total number of cartons, gross weight and total cubic volume.

Ask the supplier for this packing information after the bottle, closure and packing method have been confirmed. An early freight estimate based on an unfinished bottle design may change later.

Does Ordering More Always Reduce the Shipping Cost?

A larger order often lowers the shipping cost per bottle, but this is not automatic.

A small order may move as less-than-container-load cargo, usually called LCL. Your cartons share container space with cargo from other companies.

LCL is useful when you cannot fill a container. However, it may include several handling charges at the departure and destination ports. Those charges are divided among fewer bottles, so the shipping cost per bottle can be high.

A larger order may use a full container. This often gives a better cost per bottle, especially when the bottles and cartons use the container space well.

However, ordering more only to fill a container is not always a good decision. Extra stock also uses cash and warehouse space. The right quantity should match your sales plan, not only the container size.

A supplier can help estimate how many bottles fit in a container, but the final figure should be based on the approved bottle and packing method.

Does CIF Cover Delivery to Your Warehouse?

Usually, no.

A CIF quotation covers the goods, insurance and freight to the named destination port. Costs after arrival normally remain with the buyer.

This is one reason a CIF quotation can look lower than the amount you finally pay. Port charges, customs clearance, import duty and delivery to your warehouse may still need to be added.

What Will You Pay After the Bottles Arrive?

The shipping company may have delivered your container to the destination port, but the order has not reached your warehouse yet.

You may still need to pay destination terminal charges, customs broker fees, import duty, import tax and local delivery.

These costs depend on the country, port and shipment. They are not controlled by the glass bottle factory.

Import duty is normally based on the customs value and the product’s tariff classification. The Harmonized System provides the international base for product classification, but each country can apply its own detailed tariff codes and duty rates.

Do not choose a tariff code only because it appears in another importer’s document. The correct code can depend on the type of container, its use and the rules of the destination country.

A local customs broker can check the correct classification and estimate the charges before shipment. Give the broker a clear product description, country of origin, order value, trade term, gross weight and shipping volume.

Tax also needs careful treatment. Import VAT or GST may be claimed back by some registered businesses. For other buyers, it becomes a final cost.

Your accountant or customs broker should confirm how the tax works in your market. Do not automatically treat every tax payment as either recoverable or non-refundable.

Local delivery is another cost buyers sometimes miss. Moving a container or several pallets from the port to a warehouse can be expensive, especially when the warehouse is far from the port.

Ask whether the local transport quotation includes unloading, waiting time and container return. A low delivery price may not include all three.

Glass Bottle Import Cost for a 20,000-Bottle Order

Let us use a 20,000-bottle order to see how the costs come together.

The example is for explanation only. It is not a current market quotation. Actual prices will change with the bottle design, weight, destination, freight market and local import rules.

The supplier’s empty-bottle price is $8,400. However, the complete first order costs $19,700.

The first-order cost per bottle is:

$19,700 ÷ 20,000 = $0.985 per bottle

Rounded up, the buyer pays about $0.99 for each bottle delivered to the warehouse.

This number is far more useful than the original $0.42 bottle price. It can be used when pricing the finished product, planning profit and comparing packaging options.

What Happens on the Repeat Order?

The mold is not normally paid for again.

If every other cost in this example stays the same, the repeat-order total falls to $17,900.

$17,900 ÷ 20,000 = $0.895 per bottle

The repeat-order cost is therefore about $0.90 per bottle.

In real business, the next order will not have exactly the same cost. Freight rates, exchange rates, decoration costs and import charges may change.

Still, separating the mold from the repeat-order calculation gives you a more useful view of long-term packaging costs.

Should You Calculate the Cost per Ordered Bottle or Usable Bottle?

Use both during planning, but pay close attention to the usable-bottle cost.

In the example above, 20,000 bottles were ordered. Suppose 19,800 bottles can be used after transport and final checks.

The real cost per usable bottle becomes:

$19,700 ÷ 19,800 = about $0.995

The difference is small in this example, but it becomes larger when there is more damage, poor decoration or closure problems.

This is why a very low bottle price does not always create the lowest finished cost. Consistent quality and suitable export packing also protect your budget.

How Should You Compare Two Glass Bottle Quotes?

Start by making sure both suppliers are pricing the same product.

The bottle capacity may be the same, but the weight, color, neck size or glass distribution may be different. One price may include a closure and decoration, while the other covers only the empty bottle.

The quotations should also use the same quantity and trade term.

For example, you cannot directly compare an EXW price from one factory with an FOB price from another. The FOB supplier has already included costs that the EXW supplier has not.

Do not compare a custom bottle with a stock bottle as if they were the same project. A stock bottle may have no mold charge and a lower starting quantity. A custom bottle gives you more control over the shape, but it normally needs more time and a larger first investment.

Lead time also affects cost.

A supplier may offer a lower price but require a much longer production time. If the delay forces you to use expensive shipping or causes you to run out of stock, the cheaper bottle may cost your business more.

However, weight should not be reduced without checking bottle performance. The glass still needs to suit the filling process, closure and transport conditions.

Decoration also changes the price. A simple one-color print usually costs less than several colors, coating or complex decoration. If the brand design can achieve the same result with a simpler process, the saving continues on every order.

Closures should be compared as part of the package. A low-cost cap is not a saving if it does not seal correctly or does not fit the filling line.
